Got a call last night from an ol' friend’s wife,
Said: "I hate to bother you,
But Johnny Ray fell off the wagon,
He’s been gone all afternoon."
Well, I know my buddy, so I drove to Skully’s
And found him at the bar.
I said: "Hey man, what’s going on?"
He said: "I don’t know, where to start."

"Sarah’s old car’s 'bout to fall apart
And the washer quit last week.
We had to put Momma in the nursing home
And the baby’s cuttin' teeth.
I didn’t get much work this week
And I got bills to pay."
I said: "I know, this ain’t, what you wanna hear,
But it’s, what I’m gonna say:"

Sounds like life to me, it ain’t no fantasy,
It’s just a common case of everyday reality.
Man, I know, it’s tough, but you gotta suck it up.
To hear you talk, you’re caught up in some tragedy:
It sounds like life to me.

Well, his face turned red and he shook his head,
He said: "You don’t understand:
Three kids and a wife depend on me
And I’m just one man.
To top it off, I just found out,
That Sarah’s 2 months late."
I said: "Hey, bartender, set us up a round,
We need to celebrate!"

Sounds like life to me, plain ol' destiny.
Yeah, the only thing for certain is uncertainty.
You gotta hold on tight an' just enjoy the ride,
Get used to all this unpredictability!
Sounds like life.
Man, I know, its tough, but you gotta suck it up.
To hear you talk, you’re caught up in some tragedy:
Sounds like life to me,
Sounds like life.

Sounds like life to me,
Sounds like life to me,
Sounds like life, hmmm...

Darryl Worley's reaction to his friend's problem by answering
"sounds like life to me" and by telling him to "suck it up" is
arrogant and insensitive, period. He downplays his friend's
problems, because he doesn't want to deal with them. Dealing
with them doesn't mean solving them instead of his friend, but
it does mean to give a deep thought to them instead of just
brushing them off. How would Darryl Worley feel, if he was
in such a desperate situation and his friend just gave him the
same arrogant answers, as he did? Darryl Worley is not a
friend, he's just pretending to be. His character is despicable.
Anybody beware of him!
The problems cited by his friend are all serious, because they
all have serious financial effects:
  • Sarah's old car's 'bout to fall apart > A car could mean the
difference between a job or no job. Did Darryl grow up at all?
  • The washer quit last week > This means that his friend
would have to buy a new washing machine, but he just
doesn't have the money for it and Darryl just makes fun
of him with his easygoing attitude, instead of giving him
the money, which as a rich, Southern Republican would
never even cross Darryl's cruel and blind mind, because
he's rich and successful, so he will parrot the stinking,
    selfish "self-made man" ideology.
  • We had to put Momma in the nursing home > Just what
does Darryl think, that doing this is not a sign of financial
desperation? Isn't this a human tragedy in Darryl's twisted
mind or he just doesn't want to see it? People don't do this
voluntarily to their mothers! Wake up, Darryl, you're a little
kid, who never grew up! Bob Dylan's song applies here:
"How many times can a man turn his head pretending, he
just doesn't see?" Darryl, are you turning your head again?
Bob Dylan was a human being, while you are not!
  • The baby's cuttin' teeth > This is not directly a financial
problem, unless some medical complications/bills arise,
but in the midst of other existential hardships the last thing
you need is a screaming baby, when you feel like screaming
yourself. However, as a friend you don't have the right to
downplay even this. Either show understanding or get lost!
  • I didn't get much work this week and I got bills to pay >
This is the most serious aspect of his problems so far. What
more trouble do you need? Having work and being able to
pay your bills is the most basic need and right of a human
being! Isn't that clear enough to you, Darryl? You sure have
work and no problem paying your bills, so is that why you're
unable of compassion? You can donate milions to charities,
but if you leave your friend hanging, you're not a human being.
  • 3 kids and a wife depend on me and I'm just one man >
Well, isn't this existential enough? Darryl should have shown
male solidarity instead, because this is a classical case of a
man having been suckered into making 3 children for his wife
(otherwise she would have left him), but when hard times
come, she just takes the easy way out and depends on him,
citing her "full-time job as a mother", but nobody asks, how
many dollars she earned from that so-called "full-time job"?
So all the weight is unfairly on her husband's shoulder, which
Darryl just doesn't get, because Darryl Worley is not a real
man. He's not a man at all!
  • Sarah's 2 months late > Darryl reacts by celebrating this,
but there's nothing to celebrate here, because they just gained
an extension of 2 months, before the new baby means new
costs and problems, adding to all other problems, if those
weren't enough already. Darryl just doesn't understand the
concept, that people don't need any new problems, once
they've already got some. And that if you're a friend at all,
then you should just step in to alleviate as many of them,
as you can and not hesitate, bring up excuses, back out or
ridicule and downplay your friend's problems. Because
Darryl Worley doesn't understand the concept of a friend,
he behaves like a jerk to say the least.
